How to use the Amazon KDP Cover Size Calculator
- Finish the interior manuscript first. Cover spine width depends on the final page count after KDP rounds an odd count up to an even number.
- Select the exact trim size, paper or color interior, page count, and reading direction.
- Create one continuous cover file at the calculated full width and height. For right-to-left books, the front cover sits to the left of the spine.
- Keep cover text at least 0.25 inch from outside edges. If the book has 80 or more pages, keep spine text at least 0.0625 inch from each spine edge.
- Download Amazon’s current official template and use it as the final production guide before upload.
Worked example
For a 6 × 9 inch paperback with 200 white-paper pages, the spine is 0.4504 inch and the full bleed cover is 12.7004 × 9.25 inches, or 3810 × 2775 pixels at 300 PPI. The result changes when the paper type or final page count changes.
Common reasons KDP rejects a cover
- The page count changed after the cover was designed, so the spine no longer matches.
- The file uses 3mm bleed instead of KDP’s 0.125 inch (3.175mm) requirement.
- Spine text is used below the permitted page count or sits too close to a fold line.
- The cover contains crop marks, surrounding white space, unembedded fonts, or unflattened transparency.
- The front and back are reversed for the selected reading direction.

Why is KDP bleed 0.125 inch instead of 3mm?
KDP specifies 0.125 inch, approximately 3.2mm, on the outside cover edges. It must not be replaced with a generic 3mm value.
When can a paperback include spine text?
KDP requires at least 79 pages and describes spine-text eligibility as more than 79 pages, so this tool marks 80 or more as eligible.
Why does hardcover open the official calculator?
Hardcover files include wrap, hinges, boards, and an Amazon-generated spine. A guessed full width could cause rejection, so the exact template should come from Amazon.
Paperback spine factors used by this calculator
An odd manuscript count is rounded up to an even number before calculating the spine. Spine text is shown only from 80 pages, and its usable width subtracts KDP's 0.0625in clearance on both sides. Hardcover is intentionally not estimated because its wrap, hinge, board, and spine measurements must come from Amazon's template generator.
