How bleed changes the artwork canvas

Bleed is added outside the final trim edge. A 3mm bleed adds 3mm on the left and right, so total width increases by 6mm; it also adds 3mm at the top and bottom, so total height increases by 6mm.

How to use the 3mm Bleed Calculator

1. Enter the final size after cutting, not the current artwork size.
2. Enter the bleed required on each edge and select the intended output PPI.
3. Create or export the artwork at the full canvas result.
4. Extend backgrounds and edge-touching images to the outer bleed edge, but keep text and logos inside the printer’s safe zone.

Worked examples

A4: 210 × 297mm with 3mm on every edge becomes 216 × 303mm, approximately 2551 × 3579 pixels at 300 PPI.

US Letter: 8.5 × 11 inches with a US-style 0.125 inch bleed becomes 8.75 × 11.25 inches. Enter 3.175mm per edge when that is the provider’s requirement.

Common bleed mistakes

• Adding 3mm only once instead of adding it to both opposite edges.
• Making the document larger but leaving backgrounds at the trim line, which can create white slivers after cutting.
• Moving text into the bleed instead of keeping it inside a separate safe zone.
• Assuming every printer uses 3mm. Amazon KDP and many North American providers specify 0.125 inch, approximately 3.175mm.

Bleed does not increase the finished product size. Always confirm bleed and safe-zone requirements with the printer that will manufacture the job.
