How this calculator works
Business card trim sizes vary by region. Choose the target market, output resolution, and whether to include the standard bleed allowance.
How to use the Business Card Pixel Size Calculator
- Choose the business card standard used by the print provider.
- Select the output PPI and confirm the regional bleed requirement.
- Build the design at the full canvas size while keeping text inside the safe area.
Worked example
A common US card with 0.125 inch bleed on every edge uses a 3.75 × 2.25 inch canvas, or 1125 × 675 pixels at 300 PPI.
Accuracy note: Card dimensions and bleed standards vary by printer and country, so use the provider specification as the final authority.
Frequently asked questions
What is a US business card size?
A common US and Canadian trim size is 3.5 × 2 inches, or 88.9 × 50.8mm.
Why is the European size different?
A common European format is 85 × 55mm. Print providers can use other specifications, so always confirm before production.
Is bleed included in the displayed canvas?
When enabled, the calculator adds the listed regional bleed to all four sides.
Business-card presets are starting points
Example: a US/Canada 88.9 × 50.8mm card with 0.125in bleed on every side produces a 95.25 × 57.15mm canvas, about 1125 × 675 pixels at 300 PPI. A European 85 × 55mm card with 3mm bleed becomes 91 × 61mm.
Common card setups at 300 PPI
| Region | Trim size | Canvas with working bleed | Working safe area |
|---|---|---|---|
| US / Canada | 3.5 × 2 in 1050 × 600 px | 3.75 × 2.25 in 1125 × 675 px | 3.25 × 1.75 in 975 × 525 px |
| UK / Europe | 85 × 55mm 1004 × 650 px | 91 × 61mm 1075 × 720 px | 79 × 49mm 933 × 579 px |
| Australia | 90 × 55mm 1063 × 650 px | 96 × 61mm 1134 × 720 px | 84 × 49mm 992 × 579 px |
| Japan | 91 × 55mm 1075 × 650 px | 97 × 61mm 1146 × 720 px | 85 × 49mm 1004 × 579 px |
The safe-area column keeps important text and logos 0.125in inside the US trim line or 3mm inside the other trim lines. Background colors and photos should still run through the bleed to the outside edge.
Do not assume every printer uses this exact bleed. For example, VistaPrint US currently lists a 1050 × 600px trim, a 1083 × 633px upload canvas, and a 1008 × 558px safe area for its standard card. That differs from the generic 0.125in working preset above. If you have chosen a printer, enter its template dimensions rather than converting a regional convention.
Common production mistakes
- Assuming there is one universal business-card size or bleed rule.
- Putting logos and contact details too close to the trim line.
- Sending RGB artwork when the printer requests a specific CMYK profile or PDF preset.
- Adding crop marks when the upload service explicitly asks for none.
This calculator does not replace a die line, rounded-corner safe area, fold guide, or provider template. Use the Bleed Calculator for a custom measurement, check the result with the Image PPI Calculator, and follow the Canva print-export checklist before sending the file to a printer.
